The Banana Split Game (21-1-2016)
We are learning all about world trade in Geography at the moment. After Sister Nuala's visit, we decided to concentrate on the whole area of Fair Trade. We played the Banana Split game to see who gets what from the sale of each banana on our super market shelves. We were split up into 5 groups - the banana workers, the plantation owners, the shippers, the shops and supermarkets and the importers and ripeners. We had to decide how much each group were entitled to. We had to debate and argue our point as to why we should get our share of the banana. This was a brilliant oral language activity. We were shocked when Ms Treacy revealed how little the banana worker receives out of each banana. They only get 1c! We think this is grossly unfair. We are going to try and buy more Fair Trade items any more.
